Race Description
The Great Wall Marathon takes place at the historic Huangyaguan section of the Great Wall of China. The race begins at Yin and Yang Square inside the ancient fortress before heading toward the famous wall. Runners climb thousands of steep stone steps while traversing sections of the Great Wall itself. The course also passes through rural villages, farmland and countryside roads surrounding the historic monument. One of the most demanding sections includes the steep “Goat Track” descent and later climb back toward the wall. Participants experience dramatic elevation changes and rugged terrain throughout the race. Known for its extreme difficulty, the marathon includes more than 5,000 steps along the wall. To register for the Great Wall Marathon, all international runners must sign up for the official tour package.
