Race Description
The Charlotte Marathon offers runners a scenic but demanding tour of North Carolina’s largest city, combining urban views with tree-lined residential neighborhoods. The race starts and finishes in Uptown Charlotte at approximately 220 m elevation, creating a loop through several districts of the city. From the start in the downtown skyline area, the course winds through neighborhoods such as Myers Park, NoDa, and South End, passing historic homes, modern skyscrapers, and vibrant cultural districts that showcase the character of the “Queen City.” The terrain is known for its rolling and sustained hills, particularly in the middle and later portions of the race, where runners reach the course’s highest point of about 235 m, while the lowest sections drop to roughly 188 m. These continuous elevation changes make the Charlotte Marathon one of the more challenging urban marathons in the United States, though the enthusiastic crowd support and neighborhood atmosphere help maintain energy throughout the course.
