Race Description
The Athens Marathon follows the historic route from Marathon to the Panathenaic Stadium, tracing the legendary path of Pheidippides. The race begins with a gentle downhill section and a relatively flat opening 10 km along the coast. From there, the course turns inland and becomes progressively more demanding, with a long, sustained uphill stretch from around 11 km to 31 km. This climb defines the race, peaking near 250 m before runners are rewarded with a gradual downhill into central Athens. The final kilometers pass iconic landmarks before finishing inside the historic Panathenaic Stadium, creating one of the most memorable finishes in marathon running.
